The Trumpeter Swan has one of the most remarkable conservation stories I have ever come across. Before widespread commercial hunting, an estimated 100,000 or more trumpeter swans lived across North America. By 1932, only 69 were known to survive in the lower 48 states, all in the Yellowstone region. Then, biologists surveying remote Alaska discovered a thriving population of more than 20,000 birds. Beginning in the early 1980s, a limited number of eggs were collected each year and placed in restored wetlands across the country. The young swans returned to those wetlands to breed, helping establish new wild populations. Today, more than 40,000 trumpeter swans once again live in the lower 48, and wetlands that had been silent for a century once again echo with their unmistakable trumpet-like calls.This sweatshirt helps fund the planting of 30 trees through Trees for the Future.
