The Pacific Wren has one of the loudest songs in the forest compared to its small size, weighing about the same as two nickels. Its repeated machine-gun-like call in the spring is from the male of the species, telling other birds that this is his claimed territory. The male builds multiple "dummy nests", until a female wren comes and selects one of them to line with soft feathers, fur, moss, and other soft plant materials. They prefer to hang out close to the ground, seeking out insects in old logs and the forest floor.
